Rainbow Obsidian occurs when silica-rich lava flow from a volcano cools so rapidly that crystals don't develop and instead creates a natural volcanic glass. Micro-inclusions, often magnetite nanoparticles, reflect light through thin-film interference which produces the rainbow iridescence.
