This very rare specimen includes pentagonite crystals on sparkling druzy chalcedony with iron-rich basalt volcanic matrix - from the renowned Deccan Traps of Maharashtra, India. A rare dimorph of cavansite, pentagonite shares the same chemical composition but crystallises in a different crystal structure, making it highly sought after by mineral collectors.

Approximate Measurements - 7.1cm x 4.7cm

A Closer Look

This specimen formed inside an ancient volcanic cavity over millions of years. The natural blue pentagonite crystals grew on a sparkling layer of druzy chalcedony, a surface covered with microscopic quartz crystals. Beneath this sits iron-rich basalt, with its reddish-brown colouring produced by naturally occurring iron oxides.

This combination of pentagonite, druzy chalcedony and iron-rich basalt is characteristic of the famous zeolite deposits near Pune, Maharashtra, one of the world's best-known localities for pentagonite and cavansite.
