Agate is a type of banded Chalcedony and a mineral of the Quartz family. They are formed as silica within cavities of volcanic and plutonic igneous rocks - when gases are trapped in molten lava over thousands of years.
It's a very slow process as more silica deposit occurs on top until the cavity is filled which results in the Agate banding
