Orthoceras or Orthoceratites are ancestors of the squid. They have been found to be the earliest recognisable animals to exist - being over 400 million years ago

The black portion of the fossils is Marinace stone (Granite) that was formed by glacial movements when rocks became stuck in mud and underwent high pressures - encasing the Orthoceras
