Collector Grade Malachite Stalactite Freeform | DRC

 This rare malachite stalactite tubule freeform has deep green colour, botryoidal tubule formations and concentric eyes visible on both sides. The concentric eyes visible on each side formed around the original channels where mineral-rich water flowed during growth of the stalactite.
Sourced from Congo and semi-polished locally in Melb, this piece reveals the natural growth patterns formed during the development of the original stalactite structure.

Packaged in a specimen case for display.

Why this piece is special

1. They take a very long time to form

Stalactite malachite grows from mineral-rich water depositing layer after layer of copper carbonate. The concentric rings you see are growth layers that accumulated gradually over hundreds of thousands of years.

2. Not all malachite forms stalactites

Most malachite is massive, botryoidal, fibrous or vein material.

The material has to form under the right conditions for distinct stalactites to develop, so good stalactitic material is naturally less common.

3. Intact stalactites are uncommon

Many stalactites break during mining or extraction. Large pieces with well-defined growth structures are much harder to recover intact.
