What Is Moldavite?
Moldavite is a natural impact glass known as a tektite. Although it's commonly sold alongside crystals, it isn't a mineral because it cooled too quickly to develop the repeating internal structure found in minerals. Instead, it solidified as natural glass with an amorphous internal structure.
How Did Moldavite Form?
Around 15 million years ago, a meteorite struck what is now southern Germany, forming the Ries crater.
The impact generated enough heat and pressure to melt the surrounding rock before ejecting it hundreds of kilometres into the atmosphere. As the molten material travelled through the air, it cooled into natural glass before falling back to Earth across what is now the Czech Republic.
People often expect Moldavite to be found around the impact crater itself. Instead, genuine Moldavite comes almost entirely from southern Bohemia and southern Moravia because that's where the impact glass eventually landed.
If you've looked at Moldavite for a while, you've probably come across locality names such as Chlum, Besednice or Slavče. These localities can produce slightly different surface textures, shapes and shades of green, although there is considerable overlap between them.
How Can You Tell if Moldavite Is Real?
There isn't one characteristic that identifies every specimen. Instead, collectors usually consider several features together, along with the specimen's locality and provenance.
Surface texture

The irregular grooves, ridges and depressions seen on genuine Moldavite are one of the first things collectors examine. These developed naturally during formation and weathering rather than being carved or moulded into the glass.
Surface texture varies between localities and even between specimens from the same locality.
Internal Features
Under magnification, genuine Moldavite commonly contains elongated gas bubbles and flow textures created while the glass was still molten. These features can provide useful supporting evidence when identifying a specimen.
Colour
Moldavite is usually olive green to bottle green, although the exact shade varies depending on composition, thickness and lighting. Colour alone isn't enough to identify a specimen because manufactured glass can be produced in similar shades.
Shape
Some Moldavite pieces are thin and elongated, while others are thicker or more rounded. Shape is influenced by how the molten glass travelled through the atmosphere and where it eventually landed, so there isn't one "correct" shape.
Locality
Most genuine Moldavite comes from southern Bohemia and southern Moravia. Localities such as Besednice, Chlum and Slavče are well known among collectors, with each producing specimens that can show slightly different characteristics.
Provenance
Knowing where a specimen came from can be just as valuable as examining the specimen itself. A reputable seller should be able to discuss its origin, explain why they believe it's genuine and answer questions about its characteristics.
Are Moldavite Certificates Worth It?
Unlike diamonds, there isn't a single internationally recognised grading system or authority that certifies every Moldavite specimen.
A consideration is that certificates can add to the purchase price. Buying from someone with experience in Moldavite, tektites and meteorites, who can explain a specimen's locality and the characteristics supporting its identification, can be just as valuable.
Counterfeit certificates also exist, so a certificate shouldn't be treated as proof that a specimen is genuine. Learning to recognise these characteristics yourself will help you make informed purchasing decisions.
What Makes a Good Moldavite Specimen?

There isn't a single grading system for Moldavite, so value depends on a combination of characteristics.
Surface sculpting
Well-defined natural sculpting is often one of the most desirable features, particularly when the texture is sharp and well preserved.
Condition
Most specimens show some natural wear, but large chips, fractures or repairs generally reduce value.
Colour
Moldavite ranges from pale olive green to deep bottle green. Preference is largely personal, although brighter, more transparent pieces are often sought after.
Size and shape
Larger specimens are less common, particularly when they retain attractive natural sculpting. Unusual shapes can also be desirable.
Locality
Some localities are better known than others, and specimens from classic collecting areas may attract greater interest depending on their appearance and rarity.
